Sinn Féin MEP Martina Anderson met today the family and supporters of Kurdish MP Leyla Guven who is currently on hunger strike in a Turkish prison in Diyarbakir.
Martina Anderson said:
“News that the condition of Turkish MP Leyla Guven who has been on hunger strike since November 8 is deteriorating is extremely worrying.
“I have travelled to Turkey and today in Diyarbakir met with Leyla’s daughter, Sabiha, and her lawyers to extend our solidarity and discuss her condition.
“I also met with human rights associations, the Turkish medical association and the Bar Association.
“Alongside these meetings I will be meeting bodies representing the families of those detained, women’s movements and the People’s Democratic Party and the Democratic Society Congress.
“As Leyla Guven’s condition gets worse the need for the international community to act becomes all the more pressing.
“She and all Kurdish political prisoners need to be released immediately.”
