Diversions are in place following a two-vehicle crash in Appleby, Tasman District.

It happened just after 4pm on the Appleby Highway, at the intersection with Swamp Road.

Indications are that there are injuries involved, and some power lines are down.

Traffic is being diverted down Lower Queen Street. Motorists are asked to avoid the area if possible.

Name release – Rotoorangi fatal crash

Police can now release the name of the man who died in a crash in Rotoorangi, Waipa district, on Friday 5 April.

He was 42-year-old Blair Allison Phelps of Mamaku.

Police extend their sympathies to Mr Phelps’ family at this difficult time.

The investigation into the cause of the crash is ongoing.

Update: Aggravated robbery accused due to appear in court

Three men and a woman are due to reappear in court following six aggravated robberies and two burglaries in Christchurch over the past month.

The 18-year-old, 35-year-old and 38-year-old men have been charged with aggravated robbery and burglary.

A 36-year-old woman has also been charged with receiving stolen property.

The accused are due to appear in the Christchurch District Court today.

Detective Inspector Craig Scott says the arrests follow a search warrant at an Edgeware address on Friday night, the Armed Offenders Squad assisted.

“Aggravated robberies are a serious crime and cause significant harm in our community both physically and emotionally.

”We take this type of offending extremely seriously, the arrests confirm our commitment to keeping our communities safe and holding those who transgress our laws to account,” he says.

Investigation into death on Moutohora Island

Whakatane Police are investigating a sudden death that occurred last week on Moutohora Island, also known as Whale Island.

A man suffered injuries from a fall on the island on Thursday 4 April.

The 73-year-old was provided with first aid before he was flown to Tauranga Hospital where he later died.

The death is not being treated as suspicious however Police are currently investigating on behalf of the Coroner.

Worksafe New Zealand is also investigating.

Name release – Fatal crash, Puhinui Rd

Police can now release the name of a man who died in a crash on Puhinui Road, near Auckland Airport, on 1 April.

He was 50-year-old Colin Redfearn.

Serious assault – Tauranga

Police are investigating a serious assault in Tauranga on Sunday 7 April 2019.

A man with serious injuries was found on The Strand near the public toilets on Wharf Street around 3:45am. The assault is believed to have happened around 3:20am. The man was taken to hospital, where he remains in a critical but stable condition.

A 24-year-old man has been charged with wounding with intent and is due to appear in Tauranga District Court today.
